Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) — MOVIE REVIEW

Michael Keaton leads a star-studded cast in the terrific Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)

Michael Keaton plays an actor who is trying to escape his image as a superhero from a film series he acted in over 20 years ago. So…Michael Keaton is playing himself. Birdman mirrors Batman in so many different ways, and that is intentional. But that is only part of th Continue reading

The Imitation Game — MOVIE REVIEW

Alan Turing and company race to break Germany’s encrypted coded messages in The Imitation Game.

I can just picture all of the Academy Award nominations this film is going to get. It has pretty much all of the necessary ingredients for an Oscar winner. It has great performances, a good script, and it targets an older audience (like the Academy voters). Plus, extra points for being a historical and tragic true story. The Imitation Game is definitely going to get award recognition, and rightfully so. Continue reading

Nightcrawler — MOVIE REVIEW

Jake Gyllenhaal as Lou Bloom in Nightcrawler

I’ve seen many different versions of Jake Gyllenhaal. I’ve seen creepy Jake Gyllenhaal and I’ve seen serious Jake Gyllenhaal. I’ve seen him play two different characters in the same movie and I’ve seen him do some weird stuff when he was a younger actor. But, in Nightcrawler, this is a Jake Gyllenhaal unlike anything you’ve ever seen. He sinks into this role so much that you don’t even recognize him. Creepy doesn’t even give his character justice as a descriptor. One thing is for sure with Nightcrawler; this movie is not like anything you’ve ever seen. And that’s a good thing. Continue reading

The Wind Rises — MOVIE REVIEW

Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Wind Rises”

The Wind Rises is supposedly the final film from legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, and it is a good one. He has brought us amazing animated movies such as Spirited Away (2001), Ponyo (2008), Princess Mononoke (1997), Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), and My Neighbor Totoro (1988). This movie is no different. If this actually is Miyazaki’s swan song, then he goes out at the top of his game.

300: Rise of an Empire — MOVIE REVIEW

Eva Green as Artemisia in 300: Rise of an Empire

So this is a weird movie to review. I wasn’t a huge fan of the first 300 film, so I went into this knowing that I’d probably hate the shit out of it. This is a blog. I can swear; sue me. I felt like an outsider with the first one because I was surrounded by idiots who loved it. They loved the action, the blood, and the slow-motion sex. Also, that Gerard Butler guy, who has gone on to do….The Bounty Hunter and Gamer. Great movie role choices, Gerard. I just didn’t like it. I thought it overused the slow motion action scenes with the fake looking blood spewing out. I understand that it is a total guy movie. All testosterone and guys with badass voices killing people. I get the appeal; I just look for more in terms of story and characters in a movie. Continue reading
