24: Live Another Day (SPOILERS) — TV SEASON REVIEW

Tate Donovan and Kiefer Sutherland in 24: Live Another Day

When 24: Live Another Day was first announced, I was not pleased. I had still been royally ticked off with the entire last season, including the way they chose to end it. I didn’t want more of that garbage. But what I failed to do was think on the terrific six seasons that it had (6 + 8 were the bad ones). Just like a bad breakup, you think of the bad moments and not the good ones that had you involved in the first place. But then the Super Bowl teaser came out and it had me excited for 24 once again. It was strange. Just hearing Jack Bauer’s yell had me extremely excited for the new season. I just hoped it was done right. Continue reading

Arrow “Streets of Fire” — TV EPISODE REVIEW

John Barrowman as Malcolm Merlyn in Arrow

Arrow has just been kicking ass this season. I was hesitant when they started the season, because I knew they were going to be setting up the Oliver versus Slade showdown. I was worried because I didn’t know if they had it in them to do it right. But, I didn’t need to be hesitant because they have just killed it all season. That is mostly due to the very good performances by Stephen Amell and Manu Bennett. Tonight’s penultimate episode, “Streets of Fire,” really sets things up for an explosive finale. Continue reading

The Series Finale and the Difficulty of Satisfying Fans

The late and great James Gandolfini in the final episode of HBO’s The Sopranos

Why are series finales so hard to do in the right way? It seems like a weird question. A show can run at a near perfect level of quality for several years; but then it can piss fans off beyond belief with their final episodes. Why does that happen? This entire post is happening because of a series of conversations I have had with several people over the last few weeks. I’ve asked them what some of their favorite finales were and why they liked or hated specific ones. Shows like The Sopranos can leave fans with a bitter taste in their mouths after the final few minutes and Dexter can make the entire series feel like a waste of time to other fans. It is actually quite funny in a way. These shows become landmarks for what the quality of television should be. Yet they still manage to make fans angry.

Community “Basic Story” — TV EPISODE REVIEW

Joel McHale, Alison Brie, Jim Rash, Gillian Jacobs, and Jonathan Banks in Community

Community has always had it’s ups and downs. It is a bubble show every single year. Every year, fans pray and hope that this show gets renewed. And it comes down to the wire every year. The ratings are usually never there. But there is such a following with this show that it is difficult to just completely cancel it. Over the years, the term “six seasons and a movie” has become this huge phrase that the fans will shout and tweet whenever they can. It almost seems like Community can make it that far, if they go the distance. Which is why it was kind of humorous to have one of the final episodes of the season, and maybe of the series in general; about Greendale getting sold. Continue reading

How I Met Your Mother Final Season — Has It Overstayed It’s Welcome?

411700-how-i-met-your-mother-season-9-premiere-here-i-am-says-cristin-milioti
Let me just start out by saying that I am a huge How I Met Your Mother fan. I have watched it since it first aired and I haven’t missed an episode. It is a brilliant comedy on the CBS network. When this show first started out, everyone wondered how a story about a man meeting his future wife could run past one season. And then we kind of got a feel for the structure of the show. It worked on a high scale, mostly due to the chemistry of all five main characters. But now it is in it’s final season; season nine. And I know so many fans that already jumped off the viewing party because of its length. Is this the main problem with How I Met Your Mother? Has it just been around too long? Continue reading
