Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) — MOVIE REVIEW

Michael Keaton leads a star-studded cast in the terrific Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)

Michael Keaton plays an actor who is trying to escape his image as a superhero from a film series he acted in over 20 years ago. So…Michael Keaton is playing himself. Birdman mirrors Batman in so many different ways, and that is intentional. But that is only part of th Continue reading

The Imitation Game — MOVIE REVIEW

Alan Turing and company race to break Germany’s encrypted coded messages in The Imitation Game.

I can just picture all of the Academy Award nominations this film is going to get. It has pretty much all of the necessary ingredients for an Oscar winner. It has great performances, a good script, and it targets an older audience (like the Academy voters). Plus, extra points for being a historical and tragic true story. The Imitation Game is definitely going to get award recognition, and rightfully so. Continue reading

Wild — MOVIE REVIEW

Reese Witherspoon as Cheryl Strayed in Wild

Wild teaches us very many life lessons. If you are an attractive female, anybody will help you on a long hike. If you’re an average looking male, not so much. Wild is Jean-Marc Vallée’s follow up to his Awards-hit Dallas Buyer’s Club and I gotta say, having those two films on your resumé is a good problem to have. But a movie like this rests entirely on the strength of the main actress. Luckily, Reese Witherspoon decided to bring her A-game for this one. Continue reading

The Wind Rises — MOVIE REVIEW

Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Wind Rises”

The Wind Rises is supposedly the final film from legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, and it is a good one. He has brought us amazing animated movies such as Spirited Away (2001), Ponyo (2008), Princess Mononoke (1997), Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), and My Neighbor Totoro (1988). This movie is no different. If this actually is Miyazaki’s swan song, then he goes out at the top of his game.

Oscars 2014: Who’s Going to Take Home the Gold?

The 85th Academy Awards® will air live on Oscar® Sunday, February 24, 2013.
It’s that time of year again when people rush to their nearest theater or video store to try and catch up on all, or at least most of the nominated movies. Every year I fill out a couple ballots. I do this because there are different ways to predict the outcomes. You can go off of your own personal picks; what you think really earned the awards. Then there is also the way of trying to predict what the Academy thinks. That may change a few of your picks. Maybe knowing how much they love Jennifer Lawrence or hate Leonardo DiCaprio will alter your choices. Or you can do a mixture of the two. Have some of your picks be off of your own personal judgment and others taking what the Academy thinks into consideration.  Continue reading
